I am a level 2 Red Cross Disaster Response Team volunteer (Logistics of course!). One thing that is repeated to all volunteers & responders is to ensure we are "PREPARED". Even first aid courses teach responders to ensure they consider their safety FIRST. You can't help others if you become a patient/victim yourself. Before we can fulfill our role as a disaster responder, we have to ensure our own family's safety has been taken care of first.
Part of what we need to consider is preparation for emergencies/evacuation in our own city/town... Do you have an emergency kit? Do you have an evacuation plan? Do you maintain an emergency kit in your home, car AND in your workplace? Does your workplace have an emergency plan and supplies? It's time for you to find out! The more you know about being prepared for an emergency, the more you can help those in need...
Ultimately, I wrote this as a reminder to myself and to others: looking after yourselves and your family's needs FIRST, is not selfish; it means you will be able to help for the long-term...
