Viruses, Worms and Hoaxes

Yet more tips on avoiding the viruses, worms and hoaxes that perpetually fill our inboxes and laptops.

  • Ensure your Anti-Virus Sofware is up-to-date. Keep checking for new downloads on at least a weekly basis. Norton, McAfee and AVG have been updating frequently when there are 'epidemics' and you can download patches from their website. OR use your anti-virus software to search for updates on a scheduled basis.
  • NEVER open an attachment from someone you don't know, nor open an attachment type you don't know. As purchasers, this is difficult as many companies send unsolicited materials. If you must open the email, make sure it does not have an .exe , .vrm or other extention name that you do not recognize.
  • Before sending out that 'virus warning' make sure it is not a hoax. You can loo for th emost up-to-date virus warnings at both Norton and McAfee, and/or look up whether the warning is just a hoax at About.com or hoaxbusters.ciac.org
